Preparing for Birth: The Role of Perineal Stretching and Osteopathy
For many expectant mothers, preparing for childbirth involves a great deal of thought and planning. One technique that is often recommended to help with the physical demands of birth is perineal stretching. The perineum, the area of skin and muscle between the vaginal opening and the anus, is put under immense pressure during delivery. Perineal stretching is designed to increase the suppleness and elasticity of this tissue, with the aim of reducing the risk of tearing and the need for an episiotomy.
While the concept of perineal stretching may seem straightforward, a holistic osteopathic approach can offer valuable support to help you prepare your body more effectively. We don’t just see the perineum in isolation; we view it as an integral part of the pelvic floor, which itself is intrinsically linked to the pelvis, hips, and lower back.
The benefits of perineal stretching are well-documented. By beginning gentle stretching from around 34-36 weeks of pregnancy, you can help the tissues become more adaptable to the forces of birth. This practice not only physically prepares the area but can also help you become more comfortable with the sensation of pressure, which is a key part of labour.
So, how can an osteopath help? Our role is to ensure the entire pelvic framework is in optimal condition to support a safe and effective stretch. We can:
- Assess and Release Tension: Using gentle, hands-on techniques, we can identify and release any tension or restrictions in the lower back, hips, and pelvis. Misalignment or stiffness in these areas can place uneven stress on the pelvic floor, making it more difficult for the perineum to stretch evenly.
- Improve Mobility: We can work to improve the mobility of the pelvic joints, ensuring that the pelvis can open and move freely during labour.
- Provide Personalised Guidance: We can offer bespoke advice on the correct technique for perineal stretching, ensuring you are performing the stretches safely and effectively. We can also provide advice on beneficial birthing positions and breathing techniques that complement this preparation.
Working with Your Birth Partner
We also recognise that this journey is often a team effort. Perineal stretching can sometimes be difficult to perform on yourself, so we actively encourage you to bring your birth support person, such as a partner or doula, to an appointment. We can then show them how to perform the stretches safely and comfortably, guiding them on the correct positioning, pressure, and technique. This not only provides practical support but also empowers your partner to be a more active and confident participant in your birth preparation journey.
Perineal stretching is a fantastic tool for birth preparation, but it is best done as part of a comprehensive plan. It is crucial to always speak with your midwife or GP before starting, and to ensure you are using a good quality lubricant and are gentle with yourself. By working with an osteopath, you can ensure that your entire body is aligned and ready, and that your birth partner is fully equipped to support you, giving you the best possible chance for a positive and empowering birth experience.
