2021: Prioritising You
Dr Jarryd Crisp- OSTEOPATH- Double Bachelor of Health Science/Applied Science (Osteopathy)
Let’s be honest, 2020 was a horrible year for everyone. COVID-19 affected all of us in one way or another, whether it be mentally, financially or socially. 2020, I say good riddance! Let’s start fresh in 2021.
This means prioritising and looking after yourself. Ultimately, wanting to become the best possible version of yourself. This is something that has really resonated with me over the last couple of months. As a result, I have been focusing on a few aspects of my general wellbeing, including:
- Diet. Always making an effort to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner, regardless of how busy I am.
- Sleep. This doesn’t mean going to bed at the same time every night. However, I will always aim to get 8 hours of rest/ sleep every night, regardless of when I have to wake up.
- Physical Activity. Keep it simple. Finding a passion, whether it be going to the gym, walking, running, or playing a sport.
- Mindfulness/Emotional intelligence. Making more time for my physical and emotional needs. Asking myself, what am I feeling right now? Tired, stressed, fatigued, hunger. By paying attention to your body’s cues, you will become more aware of what it needs. For example: does it need rest, sleep? Do you need to just have a break? Are you hungry or thirsty? This is something that takes practice, but like anything, the more you practice, the better you will get.
By prioritising yourself and your needs, this will gradually filter into other aspects of your life, including work, family and social life, and will lead to more rich and fulfilling relationships at home, work and everywhere in between.
Ultimately, if we cannot take care and look after ourselves, we will be unable to take care of others, or it will come at a physical or emotional cost down the track. Therefore, make 2021 a year where you prioritise looking after yourself, and work towards becoming the best possible version of yourself you can be.
